The evening was absolutely lovely.
My daughter (M.) spent most of the day, with a girlfriend, decorating the church. I spent most of my day preparing veggie platters, pinwheels, bean dips, etc.
We're guessing that about 80 of her closest friends came for the event which began with another girlfriend playing the harp as people were seated. Also, during that time, played a slide show of pictures of M. growing up. Once everyone was seated, my oldest son welcomed everyone, opened in prayer, and led the audience singing a few hymns that M. had previously selected.
After the singing, M. delivered a speech that she had written thanking us, her parents and family, and her friends, other key adults in her life and shared a bit of what her dreams are for the future.

Next, the family was given time to share. Her father talked about his feelings of watching his only daughter grow up into a lovely young woman and charged her to always follow Christ and live a life of prayer. I spoke more about her homeschooling and the things that she enjoyed doing for school projects. I also shared about her gracious spirit--with M. bad attitudes and sour moods are rare occurrences. I then read her a letter from her brother (and best friend) in Haiti. After the brothers were given the opportunity to share we presented M. with her diploma.
You can purchase very nice diplomas from Homeschool Legal Defense Association (without being a member) and HomeSchoolDiploma.com. We bought M.'s from HSLDA, as we did for her older brother, but I have seen the ones from HomeSchoolDiploma.com and they are also of good quality.Along with the diploma, we also crowned M. as our Princess with a tiara sent from her aunt in Florida who could not attend.
Next, was a time of prayer. We invited anyone who wanted to come up to the podium and surround her and pray for her and her future. This was such a special time, a time the Holy Spirit moved. I wish you could all have heard the prayers that were sent up to the Throne of Grace for our precious daughter.

Her two best friends followed the prayer with special music. The one girl plays the harp and the other the violin. M. chose Be Thou My Vision and You Are My All In All for these selections. Following them, our youth leader led the group in singing Jesus, All For Jesus.
After the closing prayer, the entire crowd was invited to the fellowship hall for refreshments.
I've seen homeschool graduations done many different ways. For our son, Shea, we had a covered dish at an outside pavilion with volleyball following. That is what he wanted. That's what's so great about homeschooling...you have the freedom to choose...choose what's right for your family...choose what's right for your child.
How have
you done your homeschool graduations? I'd love to hear your stories.Blessings,
What a wonderful celebration! Congrats to your daughter, and to you and your husband for all you've done to bring her this far. Thanks for sharing the details and the pictures.

How did you do graduations, Karen? We'd like to know :)
ReplyDeleteI love what you did for your princess! I think that it's very special and much more meaningful than what most graduates receive. God bless and may He follow her everyday of her "grownup" life!
ReplyDeleteThank you for that blessing, Zoo. I will pass it on to her.
ReplyDeletesounds like a very nice celebration! not only for your daughter but for everyone who knows her! Congratulations to your daughter as well. May God keep his hand on her and her future.
ReplyDeleteHI Carol,
ReplyDeleteWe have had 2 home school graduations so far. We made up special announcements to send out to friends and families so they would know this mile stone was being achieved. For the first one we had a full blown barbeque with my dad coming from out of state to cook his special chicken. I tried to choose something special as a gift and for this daughter is was a bracelet with a harp charm on it - since she also plays harp. We had an area set up for her to play along with one of her sisters who plays violin. I worked frantically to make a scrapbook for her containing pictures from when she was born up to graduation. She was amazed.
My next daughter wanted something smaller so it was more a garden party with finger foods. We had the sisters playing harp and violin again and I gave her a special necklace that had been mine. Also instead of the scrapbook (it was so time consuming for the first one that I got the rest of my younger daughters working on making their own scrapbooks, which they love doing and we have great time together working on- but that could be a whole other subject, right?)we did a photo video. (it still makes me cry to watch it)
We still have several graduations to go over the next few years and I am sure they will all be different - yet special - just like our children. At least I have a year or two off. 2 years in a row was a little stressful.
I sure wish we lived close enough and could have come. Congratulations to you and M. It is an accomplishment for us moms as well as the graduate in my opinion.
Susan
Thanks, so much, for sharing, Susan! I wish we lived closer, too.

Sounds like a wonderful celebration. Looking forward to that day ourselves down the road with our daughter. Posts like this give great inspiration about finishing the journey of homeschooling.

How lovely! Congratulations to your daughter and to you!
ReplyDeleteMy kids did not want graduation ceremonies. But #3 wanted a party, so we had one at Lou Malnati's in Chicago. It was a lot of fun :)
