These birds are no longer in my laundry room. This is a portable pen that we move along on the grass. At night we take them out of the pen and put them into the barn. No more lights at night either as it has been plenty warm.I tried to get a shot showing that they not only have their wings, but their tails and breast feathers, too.
These birds are much more animated than the Cornish cross th
at we've had in previous years. It is a hoot to watch them challenge each other, and but chests, at such a young age.Another amazing thing that I have found is that I have not lost one chick. Every year I lose at least one Cornish cross for no known reason. I do have one with a little limp. I don't think his leg is broken so I've let him alone. Probably handled too rough from a little boy.
At this point they are three weeks old.
Any questions? How are your chicks doing? Would love to hear from you.
Blessings,
Hi Carol -
ReplyDeleteOoo, they're so cute!
I'm a city kid, so it's a big deal to have a veggie garden. We've never had chicks or other farm animals.
Blessings,
Susan :)
This life has truly been a blessing for our family. I could not even imagine raising children in the city again. But I am thankful that a lot of municipalities are relaxing their rules to aid in those who aspire to "urban" farming.
ReplyDeleteI have moved mine out of the garage (safely covered with chicken wire) to the new hen house we have been working on. The yard is not yet done so the door has not been cut for them to go in and out yet. My Buff Orpingtons also have most of their feathers. They were three weeks old yesterday! I am worried though about mixing them with my older hens as they have killed my chicks in the past...any ideas?
ReplyDeleteThey all look so cute lined up to eat out of the feeder. We have 6 buff orps that are 8 wks old. We have had so much fun watching them grown. One of our game hens is sitting on two eggs so we might have two more babies around the end of the month.

Monica...you do have to be careful when introducing new chicks to the flock. I'd wait until they are bigger and then keep an eye on them.
ReplyDeleteDiane...I'd love to have a setting hen. My 10 yo wants bantams because they are supposed to be good setters. We're looking for bantam chicks now.
Ah, Carol....I see one of the projects you're involved in! lol
ReplyDeleteWe got our Cornish Cross on Monday. I've never tried this type of chicken and hope you keep us posted on how they develop and weigh out at butcher time.
Will do, Lynn. I'm anxious to see, too because I'm used to 7 lb. Cornish crosses.
ReplyDeleteLove the portable pen idea!
ReplyDeletePortable pens are the way to go. We also use one for the rabbit. A rabbit on grass doesn't need any pellets in the summer.
